You've just been assigned a research paper or presentation...

Where do you start? How do you begin?

Although the research process can be frustrating and at times confusing, devising a plan will make the process less stressful and more manageable. This guide will help you to plan and execute a research project in five general stages.

Before beginning your research with step one, jump over to the last step: reflection. Keeping a research journal to document the thoughts and feelings experienced and actions taken throughout your research will help you become more aware of what you are learning and how you conduct research.

Why Develop a Research Strategy?

Reflection Point:

  • What are your initial thoughts and feelings about the research process? Does it make you anxious? Do you feel overwhelmed? Or, are you already thinking about what you will do first?
  • Do you feel that you are knowledgeable about locating information in print sources, online journals, and on the World Wide Web?
